Alabama’s Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program helps senior citizens prevent Medicare fraud and abuse.  SMP teaches seniors how to prevent and detect Medicare fraud and errors and then local coordinators and volunteers help seniors report the findings.

Reporting Medicare fraud, abuse and errors helps protect the Medicare program for future generations.  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that improper Medicare payments alone cost taxpayers over 10 billion dollars annually.

To report suspected Medicare Fraud, Abuse and Health Care error, contact the Area Agency on Aging’s SHIP and Senior Medicare Patrol Coordinator at the Area Agency on Aging at 251-706-4680 or

1-800-447-8477.

The Senior Medicare Patrol has three main messages:

  1. Protect your Medicare number and card
  2. Detect problems with your Medicare statement and get problems corrected
  3. Report anything you think is suspicious
