The Area Agency on Aging offers a wide variety of services to meet the nutritional needs of persons 60 years and older. Services include congregate meals at Senior Nutrition Centers and home delivered meals for the homebound. The Ensure nutritional supplement is available upon request when medically necessary.
Senior Nutrition Centers: For those seniors who wish to have a tasty, nutritious meal combined with social activities and fellowship, there are 25 Senior Nutrition Centers in South Alabama. They are open Monday through Friday with transportation available in most cases. Recreation is a regular part of Senior Center operations, and each center provides a monthly activities calendar. Many of the centers also offer a variety of activities to promote a healthy lifestyle such as health classes, medical screening, exercise programs and nutritional education.
Home Delivered Meals: Most of the Senior Nutrition Centers provide delivery of hot meals to homebound seniors. Center managers conduct assessments to determine each person’s eligibility. Home delivered meals area subject to availability and the delivery areas are limited. The Home Delivered Meals Program allows seniors to remain in their homes and also provides them with a daily visit to check on their welfare.
